One of a kind very large fossilized/dried mushroom that grew on a tree, called fomes fomentarius or hoof fungus. This species would be used to make amadou, a material used as tinder, among other purposes. Amadou was used medicinally by dentists, who used it to dry teeth, and surgeons, who used it as a styptic. It is still used today in fly fishing for drying flies. The back is almost flat, and it stands on its own. Wonderful shape, color and patina. Lots of character for this piece of decor that could be used in a cabinet of curiosities/wonder room or as an original decor for fall. Condition: very good condition.
